Situated approx. 1000km from Lisbon and 600km west from mainland Marocco, this Portugese island is one of the worlds premier big BLUE MARLIN destinations, With small fish weighing 500lb, and an average fish of 650lb, one in ten fish caught each year are that fish of a life time, the illusive "grander" (1000lb)
The steep drop off, only a stones throw away from the marina is also home to many other species such as, WHITE MARLIN, ALBACORE TUNA, WAHOO and the local fishermans favorite BIG EYE TUNA, which grow to world record size. SKIPJACK TUNA, MAHI and SPEAR FISH also show up throughout the year, and can quite often kill the time when waiting for a big Marlin strike.
The fishing runs all year round, with maybe the exception of December and January, (due to bad weather.) Skip Jack and Albacore are the mainstay of the early part of the year, but it is the period around Easter that kickstarts the season with the first showing of Big Eye tuna. These fish tend to average around 40lbs, but as the spring turns to summer, fish tend to range more in the 150lb to 200lb mark.
As April draws into May, White Marlin up to 80lb start to show up, and maybe even the odd Mahi will take a lure, but it is the first week of May that the whole charter fleet is waiting for. This is the traditional time for the first Blue Marlin to show up, although 2005 did see the first fish caught during the first week of April. With fish upto 1200lb, this is what brings big game anglers from all over the world.
As the summer draws out, many boats turn there attention to the Wahoo fishing, which runs through to November, and can give some real sport for the light tackle angler. |
